Tucson Comic Con!

I will update this blog soon with more info but, for now I just wanted to thank everyone who stopped by Tucson Comic Con this year and helped make my first time as a presenter so much fun! A few prints sold out and it was very encouraging to receive input from professionals and seeing reactions from people viewing my work for the first time.

I met some amazing people at this year’s con and definitely look forward to seeing you all again next year! If you want to receive updates on the Comic Book, you can write to me directly by clicking the contact page of this site, liking me on facebook at: www.facebook.com/riveramedia, or just re-visiting this blog. I look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for your support!

Quick Green Lantern Movie Review

So, as most of my friends know, Green Lantern has always been my favorite DC Comics character. When I was a kid, I even tried creating a GL ring myself. It was made from an old watch that I took apart so I could use the glowing green light to make it look authentic. But I digress. Here’s what I thought of the movie in short:

Story/Script: The overall pacing could have been better (it was a bit drawn out) but, the story was thankfully, pretty decent. They introduced the characters, settings, concept and overall tone pretty quickly so, there was no real question about what was going on or, “who is that guy?” (though, they probably could have cut out the character of “Hector Hammond” completely and still had a decent story). The main villain was Parallax which was pretty cool. Seems that they could have done more with Parallax though and his confrontation with Green Lantern was somewhat anti-climactic. Still, pretty good.

Casting/Characters: Of course like most fans of the comics, I still disagree with the casting of Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. He’s not really a good actor in the sense that he is the same character in any movie he is in. Like Jack Black, Penelope Cruz, and Tom Cruise, Reynolds is very one dimensional and is always: “Ryan Reynolds as – insert character name” instead of: “Awesome character – portrayed expertly by Ryan Reynolds”. Johnny Depp is one of the few actors that make you forget that he is acting. Others should take note. The character Hal Jordan himself was alright but written a little too cocky, instead of confident like his comic book counterpart. Aside from that, Blake Lively did a good job as Carol Ferris, which is surprising because I have seen her terrible acting on “Gossip Girl” (don’t ask). Michael Clark Duncan was a natural choice for Kilowog. My favorite character in this film however was Sinestro. I was wondering why the guy portraying him was such a good actor, then my brother told me that it was Mark Strong. If you haven’t seen him play “Archie” in the Guy Ritchie movie “Rocknrolla”, I highly recommend it. Great choice for Sinestro.

Mark Strong as Archie in Rocknrolla (left) and Sinestro in Green Lantern (right)

Special Effects/ 3D: The special effects were really good. The designs were faithful to the comics and the 3D was really good too. However, even though computer animation has come along way in the past decade or so, don’t expect realism. It was still really obvious which characters were computer generated and which sets were just the actors against green screen. This was not distracting though. The computer generated scenes were well done and still quite enjoyable.

Conclusion: Though the computer generated characters were not realistic, and Ryan Reynolds was his usual self, the special effects were really cool (especially the ring constructs), the 3D was top notch, the story was decent, and the majority of the characters were likeable which made for an enjoyable comic book movie adaption overall. I would see it again. But like I said before, Green Lantern has always been my favorite DC Comics character. Maybe it’s just fanboy loyalty but if you haven’t seen it yet, I would recommend it. If nothing else it’s a fun summer action flick.

A Superhero Game I Made…

So, the other day I was looking through some files I had archived from my old computer and found a game I made 10 years ago.

The game features a character I created over 20 years ago named “Forceman” (silly I know but, his actions make up for it). As you may know, I am currently working on the Forceman comic book (finally!) so, I was looking for old character sheets. That is when I found the game. What an unexpected blast from the past!

You see, I had intended back in the years 2000-2001 (or so) to start a career in animation and game development. As a personal test to see if that was actually the career for me, I decided to create a simple game that I could have finished and playable within a one week deadline. I did all the graphics, programming and music recording myself. This was before I even knew how to use photoshop. The result at the end of my seven day game development is not something I am very much proud of but, does make me wonder what may have happened if I pursued that career path. Like many people, I made some big (and possibly rash) decisions after the September 11th attacks in 2001. Life has been an interesting journey since then – and I have no regrets – but, this is a little peek at what may have been.

Of course, I may have dodged a bullet by not pursuing that career. Still, given the fact that I created it within 7 days, it’s not too bad. You can judge for yourself by Clicking Here to download the original Forceman game. (it’s in a zip file so, obviously you will need to unzip it first)

The object of the game is to stop the alien invasion. It features an early rendition of Forceman when he had a blue costume and didn’t wear a mask. Here are some screenshots of the actual game:

The Real Deal…

no-rivera-media-wannabesHello my dear friends. It has recently come to my attention that there are some posers out there trying to steal the good Rivera Media name to be used on some inferior “designs”. Whatever. I know originality is hard to come by these days but, at least try to be creative. Especially when you are supposed to be a designer!

Anywho… The Real Rivera Media will be producing and posting a whole lot of art and designs in the coming months. If you would like to stay updated while simultaneously letting everyone know who the real deal is, simply “Like” Rivera Media using the panel on the right or, click here to go straight to the facebook page and “Like” Rivera Media there… You know, if you got a minute.

Thank you so much for your time and assistance. You rock!

Hello again old friend…

my puppy sitting on my drawing table 1I don’t fancy myself to be the most eloquent person so, please bear with me as I try to communicate using these little symbols that represent sound.

Last Saturday, I was visiting my parents and my sisters were there. My older sister’s daughter (who is just over two years old), was clinging to her favorite toy, a little stuffed bear. I was amused by her adorable, “Don’t you even think about” reaction when I told her I was going to “get him”.

With that reaction in mind, I was compelled to ask my Mother if I, or my siblings had any similar “security blankets”. While I already knew more or less about my sibling’s, when she described mine, I had no idea what she was talking about.

After a few minutes, my Mother went to her room and came back a few minutes later holding a small stuffed animal. It was a little yellow dog.

Suddenly, I was overcome with with various unexpected emotions. I totally recognized this toy! It was like a dam in my mind had collapsed, and a flood of childhood memories was finally released.

Now, I’ve always been a somewhat sentimental guy but, not usually too concerned about material things/possessions. Seeing my long lost puppy, the only childhood friend who had never hurt me, was different than seeing any old piece of nostalgia. More than any random material thing from the past. I remember the feelings I had playing with this toy. I remember the comfort I had when I hugged him. The safety I perceived by just holding him back when I was still scared of the dark. Looking into his eyes when both his and mine were new. Always knowing that he was looking back. I remember thinking not that he was a pet (I had no idea of the concept yet) but, that he was an actual friend.

I know this may all sound a bit odd but, I never really think about my childhood because of the sadness and negativity that I now associate with it.

Being given this simple toy from thirty (yes, thirty!) years ago, I could almost feel the long dead neural connections re-forming in my brain, bridging the gap between my past and present self. I felt like I had amnesia and just got my memory back! It was as if my 4 year old self had to perish but, wanted to leave something for me to remember him by. Yet I didn’t. I totally forgot about the sad little boy with the funny bowl haircut who never felt comfortable anywhere but in his own imagination. I can’t thank my Mother enough for reminding me. Now the absence is replaced by a strong desire to visit this awkward child and reassure him that the world is nowhere near as scary as it seems. Whatever became of that pathetic child?

It occurred to me as a result of this mental journey -brought on by a puppy- that this child, this poor little boy is gone. Forever. If you see my artwork or remember any of my stories and creations, you will associate it with the “adult” me. The grown up me. Whenever my time on this planet is done, you will most likely remember me how I was right before my passing. The grown up me. If I even get my image in the obituaries, it won’t be my younger self at any stage. It will be the grown up me. Not the child. Again, he is gone. Forever.

I don’t lament my youth. I have no regrets at this point. And again, you may find this whole tangent my mind went on somewhat odd but, thanks to my Mother presenting me with this artifact from my past, the bond formed between my current self and the child I used to be is priceless. It also serves as a painful reminder of the fact that I am in fact, an “adult”. I miss my childhood self but, I now have a grown up life that I love. Grown up choices with grown up responsibilities. Not the least of which is the responsibility of figuring out what the heck I should name my little puppy.

— David

DC Universe Online Cinematic Trailer

dc-universe-onlineI think I am starting to enjoy the DC Universe more than Marvel lately.
I used to like Marvel a lot but, they seem to be cranking out more crap than ever without a though toward quality whatsoever. Just money, money, money.

DC used to be so boring and was left in the dust in the 90′s (with the exception of the “death” of superman) because of their old school heroes that had little actual character development.

They do seem to be redeeming themselves a lot lately (thanks in no small part to their acquisition of Jim Lee’s Wildstorm and having Jim Lee as Co-Publisher) and this game seems like a big leap in the right direction.

Now, the video below is not actual gameplay but, if the storyline and character design of the game is as cool as the video, I am very tempted to play this one. (Please excuse the youtube embed. I will put my own video player up here in a bit.) Check it out:

Jim Lee Wildstorm and DC Art!

jim-lee-iconsLast week, I bought a book that I have been wanting to for what seems like forever: ICONS The DC Comics & Wildstorm Art of Jim Lee (hardcover)

Unfortunately, I bought it at Borders so I paid the full $39.95 price instead of the nearly half price at Amazon. D’oh! However, after reading this book for the past week, I have to say, I would probably have agreed to pay much more for it.

Jim Lee has been an artistic role model and my favorite illustrator since I first heard of him in the 90′s when he was doing Punisher War Zone. His work on The X-men was what really grabbed my attention though(along with the rest of the comic book world).

This book however, doesn’t cover his work at Marvel but rather focuses on his work with DC Comics and his own company, Wildstorm. If you are a fan of Jim Lee like me, you can imagine how awesome it is to see behind the scenes how he does what he does best. Plus, they have the book divided by company and each company’s characters. There’s entire sections devoted to icons (hence the title) like, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern. There’s development sheets, sketches and paintings. There’s even a bonus comic at the end! Awesome!

I cannot recommend this book enough. If you love the art of Jim Lee, do yourself a favor and check it out. Here’s the (much more affordable) link at Amazon:

X-Men First Class 2011 Movie Trailer

X Men First Class Movie Cast 2011

X Men First Class Movie Cast 2011

I really only enjoyed the X-Men during the amazing Chris Claremont and Jim Lee run during the 90′s.
The movies for the most part however, were pretty decent adaptations. I enjoyed them when they were new and, they are still fun when nothing else is on. They kinda screwed up the Dark Phoenix saga, and Wolverine is supposed to be short and stocky but, otherwise they were alright.

That being said, this new movie looks to be a good re-imagining of the characters and franchise. Though it still may be too soon to tell, I think it’s promising. Judge for yourself. The first trailer release by Marvel is posted below. (Please excuse the youtube embed. I will put my own video player up here in a bit.)
